Jean Dujardin

You know that Jean Dujardin won Best Actor at the Oscars. But did you know that he played in a very popular series on tv called " Un gars, une fille"? Short comedies on the life of a couple. You can find them on you tube. Go to www.youtube.com and check " Un gars, une fille". Funny, lots of slang, good for your vocabulary, mine too and for my soul.

A powerful word

Thank you.
Merci.

Spasiba, that's "thank you" in Russian. Last summer my mother invited me to go on a cruise from Moscow to St Petersbourg. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to test my foreign language learning skills. Took the classes on the boat and enjoyed the instructor. Didn't study in my cabin. Intended to practice one phrase a day. In the end, I just said " spasiba!" as much as possible, every day. I was thrilled to see smiles on people's faces- from half cracked smiles to full ones!

That was it. Only one word stuck. But a powerful one and I am happy about that.

10 ways to keep on practicing your French

I often hear: " I took French in high school, but I had no way to use it ". Well, if the wish to speak French had laid dormant for quite a few years and if now, for some reason, that desire wakes up, here are some tips to use your French.

1 visit France
2 take a class,
3 join a local French group
4 check French groups in Arizona, go to www.meetup.com ,regiser and visit them once in a while
5 host French students
6 prepare some questions in case you happen to meet a French person in town
7 go to Monument Valley or the Grand Canyon. You are bound to find some French tourists there. They will want to know where there is a good restaurant. Be ready with some answer.
8 watch French movies, the news on the internet, listen to the radio, read, register with websites which offer French instruction, lots of free instruction on the internet
9 invite someone for breakfast, lunch or dinner
10 practice with your dog...or cat. They might like to be bilingual. Qui sait?

French news

It comes a time when we really want to know what is happening in one's home country. I was ecstatic when I discovered that I could get the replay of the news of the main French TV station on the Internet. This fortuitous discovery happened by stopping at a Burger King in Cave Creek a few years ago and finding out that the manager had an accent.. French... and from the North of France , just like me.
Go to http://www.tf1.fr/
There are 2 shows: le 13 heures ( the 1 PM news) et le 20 heures ( the 8 PM news).
In many French households it is a tradition to watch the news at those hours.
If you watch the 13 heures, you will get more short interviews of the man in the street as well unique aspects of French towns or culture.
